Query regarding testing the Native mobile app performance using J-meter

sachin Dhote

Hi Guys

Before asking a query, I will elaborate what I am trying to test;

I want to test the native mobile app performance using J-meter. I am using Redmi Note 4 android mobile for testing.

I configured the proxy server on my mobile as below;

1.       Disconnected the Mobile date and Wi-fi data is ON

2.       Installed the J-meter certificate on my mobile.

3.       Select the Wi-fi Network and in advance setting I configured the host name and proxy as 8080( Same proxy which I put in J-meter HTTPS test script recorder.

4.       Then start the proxy server.

5.       Try to login to my application.

Result: Internet connection gets lost and I am not able to login to the Application. When I open Google app in chrome browser then I am getting an error . Refer attached images for more details(‘Google Chrome_Error_After Running Proxy server.png’ and ‘Google Chrome_Error_more details.png’)

Then I followed the steps mention on “https://vmokshagroup.com/blog/how-to-test-native-app-performance-using-apache-jmeter/” url  if I mam testing from behind a firewall/proxy server.

This time also same result is coming which I mentioned above.

Could you please assist me in resolving this problem, what could be the issue?

NOTE:

After doing proxy setting on mobile and before running proxy server I tried to open www.google.com web site then it give error as below;

“You are offline.

There is something wrong with the proxy server, or the address is incorrect.

Try:

Contacting the system admin.

Error_Proxy_Cnnection_Failed”

Thanks and Regards
Sachin Dhote

Does your mobile work over WiFi without the proxy settings? Confirm for both an intranet address or an internet address.

Hi Sachin,

Is your application uses https protocol for communication?
I will suggest you to record your scripts from blazemeter recorder and then
export it in jmx format and then the same can be executed in Jmeter.

RE: Query regarding testing the Native mobile app performance using J-meter

Stuart Kenworthy
Does the machine running JMeter acting as the proxy have access to the machine you are testing?

Normal network route is...

Device -> Server

But with JMeter acting as a proxy, the route is now...

Device -> JMeter -> Server

The device does not directly talk to the server being tested against but JMeter, JMeter then sends the requests to the server on the devices behalf.

If you server is in a locked down ring fenced environment that JMeter does not have access to then JMeter cannot act as a proxy.

As a second note, can you also confirm that the device can indeed see the JMeter server and port the proxy is listening on?

Thanks

RE: Query regarding testing the Native mobile app performance using J-meter

Stuart Kenworthy
By laptop ID do you mean hostname? I would suggest you use IP address.

Can your laptop talk to the system you want the mobile to talk to?

There are a number of ways in which you can check, running a webserver on the laptop and seeing if your device can access that webpage is probably the quickest.

The key here is to confirm that the mobile device can talk to the laptop, and the laptop can talk to the server being tested.

You may need to involve your network team if you are unable to ascertain if this is true or not, not knowing your network setup I would not know where to start.

It could also be a firewall rule being set, or not being set, that is blocking the proxy port on your laptop so you device cannot connect to the jmeter proxy.

You need to do some simple network diagnostics to identify if there is a problem with kit talking to each other.

Yes my laptop can connect to mobile. But problem is as soon as I set the
J-meter proxy in my mobile then wi-fi get disconnected and I am not able to

RE: Query regarding testing the Native mobile app performance using J-meter

Stuart Kenworthy
And you laptop can connect to the system you are testing?

As for the WiFi disconnect, mobile devices, and most modern Windows devices use different methods to validate the stability of a WiFi signal.

For instance it will call a specific URL and expect a valid response. If this is HTTPS, then the SSL validation will fail at the sever or device because it will be receiving the JMeter cert.

By default, many mobile devices will disconnect WiFi and move back onto Mobile Data if the signal is unstable or these requests fail.

Check within the devices advanced network/WiFi settings to see if there is a setting similar to "Auto network switch" that could be responsible for dropping the WiFi signal.
