Parallel Logic Controller

Janine DeBeradinis-2
Hello -

I need to send some of my requests in parallel. In doing some research, I found the Parallel Logic Controller which I can use (via the JMeter plugins).  However, I see in the logs that a separate thread gets created for each parallel controller you use (I also read that in the help).  So I was wondering is this bad to use?  Does it affect your overall performance?  I am using multiple parallel container in some tests. Is this ok or not recommended?

Thanks in advance.
Janine

It depends on the nature of the requests. If you need to mimic a "spike",
i.e. need to simulate 50 users concurrently doing the same action, i.e.
checking out an item, logging in, voting, etc. - you don't need any plugins,
JMeter's Synchronizing Timer
<http://jmeter.apache.org/usermanual/component_reference.html#Synchronizing_Timer>
will be sufficient.

Parallel Controller comes into play where you need to implement some "egde"
conditions, for example if after login your application dashboard is being
loaded in several parallel threads originating i.e. via  AJAX
<https://www.w3schools.com/xml/ajax_intro.asp>   requests.  In this case you
won't be able to easily simulate this type of load using JMeter built-in
test elements, however with the Parallel Controller it is a matter of
seconds. Check out  How to Use the Parallel Controller in JMeter

article for more details on Parallel Controller use cases.

Thank you for the response.  It is the latter that I need and had already found that article on the parallel controller.   I just wasn't clear if that might affect my performance numbers?  But it sounds like it is what I need to use.

Thanks.

Are you concerned about the performance numbers of the application you are
tested against? Or the performance of the load generator sending the
requests?

In both cases, adequate monitoring of connections/threads should pick up
any issues.

RE: Parallel Logic Controller

Janine DeBeradinis-2
I am concerned with how using the parallel controller will affect the performance number of the application I am testing against.  Since the parallel controllers spin up an extra thread, if I have a few controllers in one test, then I have a bunch of extra threads running.  I would think that might affect the performance numbers?

Thanks.

Re: Parallel Logic Controller

Yes, it could do.

I wouldn't think of it in terms of threads on the load generator, though,
but more in terms of concurrency of requests to the application you're
testing.

In theory you're simulating the client more authentically in that it sends
a number of requests concurrently, and although the request rate may be a
little spikier, the same number of total requests will be made.

Perhaps run a before and after test for both setups, and monitor around
outbound connections on your LG and inbound connections on the application
servers to see what the impact is.
