Load I can generate?

deicool
Hello

Can I generate 25000 concurrent users in Jmeter? Has anyone done that
before? Also how many hardware boxes would I need for generation of that
kind of load, and their configuration if possible? Windows & Linux?

Also can I reduce the concurrent users by making the 'Think Time' zero?

Please advise.

Thanks
Deepak

Are you attempting to do a Load Test or a do DDoS? :)

No one would be able to answer this question, this is you who needs to measure it.

The number of users you will be able to simulate on a given host with given hardware specifications depends on several factors:

 1. The number of samplers in your Test Plan
 2. The nature of test (i.e. GET or POST requests, request and response size, etc)
 3.  The number of Pre/Post processors used for parameterisation and/or correlation and assertions

So if you have single GET request to a small page - you will be able to simulate 10 000+ users. And if you have a lot of requests which are uploading large files - it may be 500 users only.

You can measure this like:

 1. Make sure you following JMeter Best Practices and recommendations from 9 Easy Solutions for a JMeter Load Test “Out of Memory” Failure guide
 2. Gradually increase the users from 1 to 2500 (or how many you need to simulate) and at the same time observe baseline OS health metrics using your operating system toolchain or JMeter PerfMon Plugin
 3. When any of OS health metrics exceeds i.e 90% threshold (CPU, RAM, disk or network IO) or system start swapping - stop the ramp-up and mention how many users were online at that moment. You can use i.e. Active Threads Over Time listener for this

That's it, this is how many users you are able to mimic for particular this test on particular this machine. Not enough - just add another machine and go for distributed testing.

Re: Load I can generate?

Pravesh Prajapati
Hi Sir,
Please find the attachment for scaling environment in Jmeter.

I have mentioned the things as follow.
If we have 4-6 scenario per application with 10-15 samples,
Then we need M\C having configuration of 8 GB RAM, I-3/I-5 processor(2.5-3
GHZ)  for executing approx 1800 VU on slave m\c.

Re: Load I can generate?

sbos-61
Hi,

IMHO, scaling depends on a lot of factors.
Some of them are pretty difficult to predict in advance, but I will include:
- size and complexity of the request and response (do you retrieve embedded objects? How many threads?)
Generally speaking,  REST interfaces are lighter than complex web pages
- type and complexity of assertion applied on responses
- complexity of the script: some samplers can be heavier than expected (e.g. OS sampler)
- amount of data to use (CSV files)

I suggest you to do some test with your script on a single slave configuration and check you mileage.
That said, I managed a test bed where each slave machine simulated 2200 users, with constant throughput timer at 30seconds.
JVM had 4 G Bytes and 4 fast speed core (AWS infrastructure).
There was even room for more load.
Some key factors you have to keep under control are:
- bandwidth toward the system-under-test
- bandwidth toward the master (result data)
- amount of RAM for the JVM and GC configuration.

HTH

Sergio

Sergio

How many total slave machines did you manage in your test bed? Or how many
total number of concurrent users did you test with?

Thanks
Deepak

Re: Load I can generate?

sbos-61
I used 1 master, 4 slaves, 1 redis server.
I reached about 9000 virtual users.

regards
